“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this lovely beach in Ocean View, Virginia when I was participating in the “Coastal Virginia Plein Air,” an outdoor painting event and community fundraiser. Artists came from around the region to paint together and enjoy the beautiful scenery that the Tidewater area has to offer. I liked the way the dune grasses cast spiky shadows across the sand at this early time of day.
