“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this during the 2019 Plein Air Chincoteague event at the Assateague Island National Seashore. I had just packed up my gear and was heading back to my car after a rather frustrating painting session trying to paint the cove nearby. Then I spotted the nice long cast shadows from the nearby dunes, sitting just below beautiful golden light forming on white puffy clouds. I knew from experience the light would change very quickly. But I was there with all of my gear, so how could I refuse when the opportunity presented itself?
