“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this piece on location during our annual summer vacation to the North Carolina’s Outer Banks. This beach was in Nags Head, right next to the Nags Head Pier, where we had seen the July 4th fireworks just a couple of evenings before. It was a perfect summer morning at the beach!
