“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this sunlit fountain on location in April when I visited Norfolk Botanical Garden during the Coastal Virginia Plein Air painting event. This was my first visit to the gardens, and I was truly impressed by its thoughtful design and vast size. This fountain is flanked by long rectangular pools and perennial plants in every direction. My view shows the large visitor center and giftshop building in the distance. I look forward to returning for another visit, as it is sure to impress at any time of year.
