“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
Years ago I had the privilege to visit the home and gardens of Claude Monet, and I found it so inspiring to think that he could have such talent both in painting and design of the ponds and gardens around his house. I don’t match his gardening prowess, but even so I have always managed to cultivate a little garden of my own where ever I have lived. I have lots of sun in my yard, so summer flowers like daisies, zinnias, and purple cone flowers flourish. I painted this piece on location right in my own back yard. Can’t beat the commute!
