“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. About the painting:
I painted this on a beautiful day in early spring at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. I enjoyed the contrast of the smooth trunk from this elegant but bare magnolia, swaying above a blanket of vibrant bluebells at her roots.
