“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

In the early spring there is nothing so exciting to me as the many flowering trees that put on their show in Virginia. They come and go very quickly so I have to have my outdoor painting kit ready to go to capture them on the spot. I always try to make sure I keep my membership up to date at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens so that I can get over there to paint in the early spring when the flowering cherries and redbuds are blooming. The dazzling redbuds surrounding this gazebo at the edge of a reflecting pond seemed to me an ideal place to contemplate nature's gifts at this special time of year.
