“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this shady rhododendron-lined walk on location in April when I visited Norfolk Botanical Garden during the Coastal Virginia Plein Air event. The azaleas were in full bloom at this time, and I enjoyed the way the rich colors of green set off the beautiful vibrant pinks of the shrubs. Renaissance Court was one of the favorite areas I explored. With its tall cypresses, palm trees, and formal structures, it reminded me of some of the beautiful gardens I admired on my many visits to Italy.
