“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
Maymont Park is truly one of the gems we are blessed with in Richmond, Virginia. I painted this eastward view one spring morning when the tulips were in bloom. This location with the winding paths and green rotunda is a popular spot for outdoor weddings and family portraits, and it is not a mystery as to the reason. I did another painting in this same location, facing in the opposite direction on consecutive days.
