“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
It’s pretty exhilarating painting at the scenic overlooks on the Blue Ridge, especially in Floyd, VA, where the elevation is high. When big billowing clouds are in play, the shadows they cast on the mountaintops are constantly changing and drifting and shifting. It’s a real challenge (and perhaps a futile one) to try and pin them down. Sure is fun trying though!
