“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. About the painting:
I painted this on a a recent summer trip to the mountains in Bath County, Virginia. The air was surprisingly cool during a period when there was a serious heat wave back home, so I really enjoyed taking advantage of it. This was painted on the spot near the charming town of Warm Springs.
