“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this during the 2021 Plein Air Roanoke Festival. I along with a couple of friends discovered this lovely small dairy farm during one of our drives in the countryside. I was attracted to the dramatic turns in this lovely brook, which at times was surrounded by grazing black and white dairy cows. They wouldn’t cooperate long enough for me to paint their portraits, so I took lots of photos with a plan to capture them later in a studio painting, and concentrated on studying the lovely brook as it cut its way through the beautiful green grasses framed by spring trees and the mountain beyond.
