“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this piece during a springtime outing to a beautiful private property situated along the Little River with the Virginia Plein Air Painters (VPAP) group. This view is part of the little tea house that sits over a pond surrounded by gorgeous trees and azaleas. This painting was done in oils on Arches l’Huile paper, a special paper sized to accept oil painting without the need to prime or frame under glass.
