Painting in the mountains for a few

I'm heading out tomorrow to do some plein air paintings in the mountains of North Carolina. I hope I will be able to catch the autumn leaves at their peak! I'm bringing my computer so, barring any technical difficulties I plan to continue blogging while I'm gone.

New studio/gallery space

Coming in January 2007 I will be operating out of my new location in Richmond's downtown arts district. I just signed the lease for the near-future site of Jennifer Young Studio & Gallery!  The space will be located at 16 E. Main Street, Richmond, VA 23219. This is a beautiful space in the historic Monroe-Ward district located just two blocks from the luxurious Jefferson Hotel. My new space will be both my workspace and showroom. We'll hold a grand opening reception and art show with some new works at the new location on Friday, December 1st, 2006 from 6 to 9 p.m. The opening will coincide with Richmond's First Fridays art walk, and I've invited Dave's band, "The Unknown Favorites" to play that evening. The show continues on Saturday, December 2nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here to view a map and get directions to the studio. Come visit us if you're in Richmond!

I'm feeling quite excited and a tad nervous about it but it is a good thing. Between now and then we will be doing a lot of work on the space, securing lighting, signage, permits, etc. In between all of this I'll need to get some painting done too! :-o  I'll post progress updates as best I can here on the blog.

Art Books

I have begun to compile a list of Art Books that I have enjoyed or gotten a lot out of. I went to art school, but landscape painting was NOT the focus there. So after I started painting landscapes I went about furthering my own education, primarily through art books and experimentation. I also took a workshop here and there as I got more involved, but books have always been an important componenet in my art studio. Follow this link to see my art library. I only just begun, but will be adding more to this as time allows. Tags: art painting landscape painting art books plein air

Italy garden painting

I took small breaks during a big commission to work on the above painting of the Villa Monestero gardens (Varenna, Italy.) The villa is located in the Lake Como area of Italy where my husband Dave and I visited this past summer. The gardener was setting out new pots of flowers as we toured the garden. What to him might have seemed a haphazard arrangement made a nice composition to me! This piece measures 30" high by 24" tall. Not the best photo of this piece. I will try to reshoot it a little later on. I may work on it a little more but it's back to the commission for now!

More paintings of Italy can be seen on my website here.

Large format prints

This morning I am off to the printer's to do my final round of proofing for my new series of large format giclee prints. I am excited to be launching this new print series. The proofing has been a rather involved process. Apparently according to the printer I use an extraordinary range of greens in my paintings that are difficult to replicate. I will take this as a compliment, especially since I just recently posted about the difficulty of mixing greens ;-). In any event, my last round of proofs were looking really great. Just a tweak here and there one last time and I expect to sign off on them today. So hopefully I will have some new offerings sooner than I thought! I'm offering a pre-order special of 10% off the regular print price on my website for anyone who would like to purchase one of these prints prior to the official release on 11/1. The release date will allow me some extra time to get the canvas prints stretched and secure packaging for the paper ones.

I hope to post some more artwork to my blog soon. In the midst of running back and forth for the print proofing, I am working on a large commission of three 30x40" paintings. I'm 2/3 of the way there though, so that should open the way for more image posting here.
