“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

About the painting:
I painted this during the 2021 Plein Air Roanoke Festival. On this day a couple of painter friends ventured out into the countryside and ended up in Floyd County. After a lot of driving around we were finally rewarded with the discovery of this small dairy farm overflowing with charm and buttercups. We started out on the side of the road but the family that owned the farm was gracious enough to let us enter the farm and paint there until sunset. This lovely bucolic scene captured in paint was the culmination of that day. It garnered the 2nd place price at the festival.
