“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These spectacular Yoshino cherry trees on location at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden during during the height of early spring. The cherry trees are just like the ones along the tidal basin in Washington D.C., that were gifted from Japan. In the distance you can see the striking domed conservatory that sits at the top of the hill gazing down upon us all.
