About the painting:
One of my most memorable visits to Italy included a trip to the southern Tuscan town of Montalcino which sits in the Sienese province. We spent several days there hiking, sketching, snapping photos, touring, sipping wine. In the springtime red poppies blanket the area. The make a lovely contrast to the silvery foliage of the olive groves that are almost as profuse in the landscape as the vineyards.
