I painted this piece on the heels of a springtime painting trip to the beautiful Lot and Dordogne Valleys in southern France. I painted a study of this magical site on location during the local "plant festival". Abbaye Nouvelle means "new abbey", but in fact, this site is partially in ruins and dates from the 13th century. Back home in the studio, I was able to expand on my ideas from the field study and recreate the experience on a much larger scale.
