“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. These may be used as references for larger studio pieces, but they also stand on their own for their freshness and immediacy. * You can find even more of Jennifer’s plein air work in the gouache gallery.

I painted this piece during a plein air outing in early spring to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. This view is of the gorgeous old pink magnolia situated near the community garden behind the conservatory. It is an early spring bloomer that never disappoints.
