“En Plein Air” is a French phrase meaning “in the open air”. In painting it refers to the little field studies done on location, a practice central to the approach of the French Impressionists. For me, painting on location is a way to develop a deeper understanding of the subject and the play of light, and to capture the fleeting moment and cement my impressions of a particular location, time and place. Though I don't get there often enough, I have long maintained a love affair with North Carolina's Outer Banks. On this particular visit, my family stayed in a beach house not far from the Nags Head fishing pier. Though I have painted the sunrise surf many times, each and every sunrise is a wholly new experience. I love painting on the beach at this time of day, when it is just me and the fishermen and a few seagulls stirring.
